Thump Thump

I headed in for a regular OB appointment on Monday, where I heard baby's heartbeat on the doppler (about 170 beats/min). Everything is looking good. I have an anatomical ultrasound scheduled in November. And nope! We're not finding out the sex of this baby either! I love a good surprise, especially after 40 weeks of exhaustion/nausea/aches/brain fog, haha!

Craig made me ask the doctor about scheduling the c section for 4/3/21 because he can easily remember that birthday, hahaha! Unfortunately, that's a Saturday and they won't do scheduled c sections on Saturdays. Craig says he has to come to the next appointment to try to compel the doctor to abide by his wishes! I about died laughing.

I can't believe it will be November in a couple weeks and the kids will be having birthdays. Gabriel turns 6 on the 1st, and Grace turns 2 on the 14th. When did my babies get so old?!?!

Chugging along

Well, we're into the 2nd trimester now!
There isn't much of a baby bump yet, mostly a food belly, haha! But things are good otherwise. I am much less nauseous. I'm still exhausted though. I'm glad we just passed midterms at work so the semester is over halfway done. I need a break!! My doctorate is going well, though that is time consuming also. Hybrid kindergarten with Gabriel takes a lot of my time, too. I'll be thankful when everything can get back to normal -- and not this 'new normal' but the old one. I want to be able to bring Grace to storytimes and to get together with friends whenever and wherever. The one thing I have appreciated during this crazy pandemic is being with my family. These kids and Craig are the most important things in the world to me, and it's been a blessing to be 'forced' to be home with them more this year (as much as we might also drive each other crazy sometimes!).

My next doctor appointment in next week, but it's just a brief one to check on baby's heart rate. I was finally able to hear it on my own doppler machine at 14 weeks + 2 days after searching for weeks. That was exciting and relieving.

Miracles just happen like that

Yay for an amazing ultrasound today! Baby is 5.82cm from crown to rump, measuring right on time at 12 weeks & 2 days. His/her heart rate was 169. (Baby's head is on the right with a little button nose; his/her belly is on the left.)

This baby's "anthem" is Miracles by Colton Dixon. It was playing on the radio when I went in for several appointments this pregnancy.

I'm unbelievably happy that all is well! I can't wait till we tell the kids! Gabriel will be so excited; he mentioned the baby we lost in April and seemed so sad. This will be great news for him!

I created our baby announcement the other day, with the theme of The Three Little Pigs. Now I just have to load the pictures in. I can't wait for everyone to get it!

This pregnancy has made me so emotional with everything going on in the world and in our lives. Having something to celebrate just changes my whole mindset. Thank God for this gift!

Pregnancy #7

First, a moment of silence for the baby we lost in April 2020 at 7 weeks gestation. I thank God every day for the opportunity to love our angel here on Earth as long as we did and for working things out so that I did not have to have surgery.

No one knows yet, but we are expecting our 3rd child (7th pregnancy). I'm just over 11 weeks along. This pregnancy has been different from those with Gabriel and Grace already. Craig wanted us to wait to tell people about this pregnancy because we had had to tell people about the last miscarriage after having revealed we were pregnant early on. I wanted to tell early so we could have the support we need in case something does go wrong, but I respected his opinion on telling. Miscarriage is a lonely time for women. It's not taboo; it's not like we did something wrong to make it happen. We want prayers and love.

Ok, back to the beginning... I honestly was surprised when I took an early pregnancy test in July and saw two lines!! We had just had our fourth miscarriage three months before. Every time I get pregnant, I struggle with the emotional roller coaster of excitement and anxiety. If you have never lost a baby, I'm not sure you quite grasp this feeling. I'm not even sure a father understands exactly how a mother feels about this, but maybe some do. To go from having life within you to feeling a void, a piece of you missing. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Anyway, so back to this amazing miracle baby! After our most recent loss, I spoke to my OB about steps we could take to make my body a more hospitable place to sustain a pregnancy, in case that was the issue. (Most miscarriages are thought to be a result of a chromosomal problem with the baby, but this isn't well studied and sometimes it's the mother's body that is the problem.) I wanted to know about things we could do that wouldn't stop the natural course of events (should things to poorly again) but that could potentially help. We decided taking a daily baby aspirin and using progesterone supplementation were two active steps I could take to help my body sustain a pregnancy.

This decision led to lots of early blood testing for HCG and progesterone. I won't say that this didn't stress me out, because it did. Waiting 24hr for results is just awful!

3wk+5d: HCG 52
4wk: HCG 164
5wk: HCG 2230
6wk: HCG 7694; progesterone 6.4

Also at 6 weeks, we had an early ultrasound. The baby looked great! (Baby is that little white dot in the top of the black circle.) The heartbeat was 110, and baby measured 0.31cm from crown to rump. Perfection and SUCH a relief! However, the HCG level was rising slower than expected, so we got more bloodwork. Yay (with heavy sarcasm).

6wk+2d: HCG 9881

On this day, I also started progesterone supplementation since 6.4 was low normal (4.1-34 is normal range for 1st trimester).

7wk: progesterone 15.4

We got another ultrasound to check on things due to the low HCG. Baby grew beautifully to 1.03cm, with a 157 heart rate. (Baby is the white 'blob' at the top of the black circle. The white circular thing on the right next to baby is the yolk sac.) Again, perfection! The plan was to monitor HCG one more time to make sure it kept rising, and to track progesterone weekly.

8wk: HCG 53800; progesterone 11.5

We weren't really expecting this dip in progesterone, but it can happen around this week of pregnancy. Yay for HCG rising but it still wasn't that high. Again, rising is good. I started doing some more research -- because I am a nerd. It turns out that even though OBs use the 'rule' of HCG doubling every 48hr as ideal, it was a small study of only 20 women with a confidence interval of 85% (both bad signs for a really good scientific study) that decided this. In fact, 35% of women don't see numbers that double this quickly!! It's more realistic to see a 60% increase over 48 hrs for the majority of women. Again, not EVERYONE. Sometimes I shake my head at the solemn use of rules in medicine thatare not backed by good science! Now, if my OB had said, "don't worry, 35% of women don't rise like that," I sure would not have been worried as much. After this geeking out, I stopped worrying about HCG and plan to never worry about it again in the future. HCG rising is important, not by how much.

But I digress. The plan was now to check progesterone in two weeks.

10wk: progesterone 14.4

Well, that's odd, isn't it? The drop? Some doctors feel that as long as progesterone is a level that is "enough" (ie, not quantifiable) to sustain a pregnancy, it doesn't matter the number. Others would be starting me on injectable progesterone to boost it higher, preferrably over 30. My OB is in the former group. I am still undecided as there is very little data on progesterone in pregnancy, which is incredibly interesting! Some sources say that a woman's progesterone can vary by minute and thus a single test will not give the full clinical picture of the progesterone level. So the plan now was to test in two weeks, at the same time as my next ultrasound and first OB appointment. That brings us to next week.
In the meantime, that's a total of 5 weeks between ultrasounds and checking on the baby. I hate that. My anxiety is increasing now that we are a week away. I haven't been able to find baby's heart beat on a home doppler, which would be incredibly soothing to hear.

During the time just before this pregnancy and ever since finding out we conceived, I have felt a transition in my spiritual life. I have prayed more than ever, have put more trust in God than ever, and have praised Him for the good things He has planned for us more than ever. Do I feel anxious? Yes, but I am putting my faith in God and His plan.

So now we wait...

All the Feels at 40 Weeks

It's been a crazy past four weeks.  There have been ups and downs, happy and sad.  It's been really difficult to figure out how to feel, honestly.

My dad died on October 24th in Italy, after my brother was able to be there to spend the previous two weeks with him in the hospital.  Unfortunately, being 36+ weeks pregnant meant I could not be there in person with them, as much as I wanted to.  There's not much I can say about losing a parent.  I guess it's one of those things that you know is coming eventually, but you don't expect it to come so soon and you're really not prepared.  It's really been difficult, especially with balancing grieving and being happy about the new baby coming.  I wish Dad could be here to meet his grandchild, but at least I know he is watching from heaven.  I found this beautiful picture of him the day after Gabriel was born in 2014.  I think his smile says it all.

Nonno & Gabriel - November 2, 2014

On to happier topics...

Halloween was fun this year.  Gabe was all about trick or treating!  He wanted to be a skeleton, so I got a matching costume!  Even with us walking the ENTIRE Craig Street hill, baby still did not make his/her debut, ha!

And yes, the costumes glowed in the dark!
We also celebrated Gabriel's actual 4th birthday as a family of three, for not much longer!
Last birthday as a family of 3!
This week, we made it to full-term at 40 weeks.  I guess my babies like their womb with a view!  Our weekly appointment went well.  We officially have an eviction date (AKA a repeat c-section date), if baby doesn't decide to arrive on his/her own.  Gabriel has been talking to the baby and says s/he does not want to come out yet.  I've still been working, cleaning, grocery shopping, etc, and I have to say that I feel pretty good considering there is a heavy beach ball attached to my belly!  I am so ready to see my ankles again for more than 5 minutes when I wake up in the morning, though!  We're all so excited to find out if baby is a boy or a girl!  Hurry up, baby, we want to meet you!
Taken one day late, but baby was still inside!

Full Speed Ahead!

On the nesting, I mean!  Baby can cook a bit longer in my opinion, ha!

This past week, we've readied the crib and the animal mobile, figured out the bassinet & chair set-up for our room, made some freezer meals, and completed hospital bags for me & baby.  I also picked out baby announcements, baptism invitations, baptism thank you cards, and our annual New Years card - minus baby's name and pictures.  I'd consider that hard-core nesting, right?!  (If only I could do the same with my work life!)  Baby has definitely been telling me when I'm doing too much with all the practice (Braxton-Hicks) contractions I get when I need to take a break.

Speaking of the baptism, we officially have Godparents!  Craig's cousin Rachel and his nephew Michael will be accepting the honor for our new little one.  Yes, it's weird to not know the sex of the baby but already have Godparents and a baptism date, haha!  That would be my type-A personality coming out - plus the problem of the Christmas season being right around when we wanted to schedule it.  Now we just need a reception location...

There's not much left to do for baby's actual arrival - clothes have already been prepped and washed, car seat bases will get installed in the next few weeks, and Gabe is ready for 'his' baby!  When we were converting the crib from toddler back to baby mode, he said, "Mama, is baby coming today?"  You can bet I squashed that thought immediately!  Around 4 more weeks to go...

We had our 36-week appointment this week.  Everything looks good.  My group B strep test came back negative, which is good (and different from last pregnancy).
36 weeks on October 11, 2018

We also had Gabe's 4th birthday party at home this past weekend.  It turned out to be a great day with good weather, and all the kids had a blast!
Birthday boy is almost 4!

Mama broke out the facepaints for the kids

Delicious cupcakes!
Couldn't resist sharing this one of Babcia & Gabriel!
